Tadao Ando is one of Japan's most internationally recognized architects.
Born in Osaka in 1941, Ando studied architecture independently after an early career as a professional boxer. His travels around the world and study of major architectural works played an important role in shaping his architectural philosophy.
He established Tadao Ando Architect & Associates in 1969 and later taught as a visiting professor at Yale University and Harvard University before becoming a professor at the University of Tokyo.
Ando received the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1995 and Japan's Order of Culture in 2010.
